Reviews
In his intro, the author states “Fluent in French” is unlike other guides to learning the language, and that's true. Many language books offer the learner a particular system or pattern for learning the language. Many others are simply phrasebooks. “Fluent in French” is neither. The book discusses approaches to the process of learning French. You won’t find a lot of worksheets or vocabulary lists (although there are plenty of resources scattered throughout the book and included in the back), but you will find a thorough look at how to keep up your motivation and what strategies you should use for improving your speaking, reading and writing. As long as you understand the book will not teach you French, but will instead teach you how to learn French, this is a worthwhile purchase. I studied the language from middle school through college, but now that I’ve been out of a university setting for several years, my progress has stalled and it’s difficult to keep up my motivation. “Fluent in French” addresses this very issue. The author obviously understands the struggles of people who are trying to learn a new language. If you’re an absolute beginner, “Fluent in French” may not be the book you’re looking for. If you’ve committed to taking classes and have made a little bit of progress, though, it’s definitely worth a read.

Fluent in French is a straightforward book that breaks down the basics of learning French. I have been fortunate enough to visit France in the past and would love the chance to return but have been wary due to my lack of French speaking skills. I stopped taking French lessons in high school and am quite rusty as a consequence. Fluent in French seems to be made just for someone like me. It reminded me of the basic concepts previously learned and taught me more practical and efficient ways to fully understand and implement the French language. In particular, I enjoyed the “myths” section. It broke down the difficult parts of the French language, which had previously seemed overwhelming and prevented me from trying to pick up the language again. There are easy to follow examples and answers to common questions about learning the French language.

This book is an excellent choice for anyone that wants to learn French or improve their fluency of the language. As someone who started learning French several years ago in college, this book will now be a valuable source that I will reference from time to time so one day I may become Fluent in French. When you learn to choose the right words instead of these long drawn out sentences, it does make it easier to memorize French.
