«William Wells Brown (1814 – 1884) was a prominent African-American author, playwright and lecturer who is considered one of the first significant antislavery activists. An escaped slave, he dedicated his life to writing a truthful memoirs, essays, novels, biographies and finally became the most widely published and influential slave narratives.
The biographical essay “Benjamin Banneker” is included in “The Black Man, His Antecedents, His Genius, and His Achievements” volume – a collection of historical sketches briefly depicting the life paths of several great black men. Published in 1863, the “Benjamin Banneker” essay is about the mathematician and amateur astronomer, whose force of spirit helped him to overcome all the difficulties and raise himself to positions of honor and influence.
