A Fate Inked in Blood

A Fate Inked in Blood

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king—while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son—in the first book of a Norse-inspired fantasy romance series from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband’s back.

Freya’s dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region’s jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: She possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. It was foretold such a magic would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls the shield maiden’s fate.

Believing he’s destined to rule Skaland as king, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. The greatest test of all, however, may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

  • A book for Viking Lovers

This book grabbed me by my Viking-loving soul and refused to let go. It combines Norse mythology with forbidden romance and just the right amount of magical mayhem. Freya, our shield maiden with a spine of steel and a heart full of responsibility, is the kind of FMC who makes you want to wear chain mail and start axe training. And Bjorn? Well, his name is Bjorn… what do you think he’s gonna be like?! Their chemistry? Well, they meet when she throws a fish over her shoulder and hits him in the face. Ah, a perfect meet cute. Ok, ok, later on there’s a “yeah, I married your dad so maybe we shouldn’t do this” situation, but you can get past it. It’s fine. It’s fine. Her writing? The pace of the book is perfect. The dialogue works well. Overall, Jensen weaves a messy, heartfelt, slow-burn (then fast-burn) romance that makes your nose sweat. The worldbuilding is rich, the magic system is clean and clever, and the Norse vibes are strong enough to make Thor pump his fist. This is my first Jensen book, and definitely not my last. I’ve already preordered the second part of this series, A Curse Carved in Bone, which is due out next month.

  • Well worth it!

I’ve always loved Norse mythology and this book connected that and my other love for heroine’s who fight for what’s right. Internal battles between right and wrong. Love and betrayal. It has it all. Keeps you on the edge and not wanting to put it down. I can’t wait to see what Freya’s fate has in store for her in the next book. I’ve already pre-ordered it. Read it. You won’t be disappointed.

  • exciting and original fantasy

it was very original; it uses norse mythology to set up a new universe with exciting world building and lore. loved the balance of action/adventure to romance - though the lead was infuriating at times! recommend for fantasy lovers.

  • Just ok..

Very slow start. More battle than romance. The spicy parts weren’t that great and you have to wait for the last 100 pages to get anywhere.
