There are few characters from literature that take on a life of their own, but Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective, is definitely one of them. From his first appearance in 1887 in the “Strand Magazine”, Sherlock Holmes and his constant companion Dr. Watson delighted every reader who came into contact with them, and when Conan Doyle, tiring of his masterly creation, killed him off in 1893, there was such a public outcry that he was forced to devise a complex story line to bring him back to life. This program has been designed to explore not only the legend of Sherlock Holmes, but also take you on a journey of discovery through the life and times of his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Beginning with the medical establishments of Edinburgh, where Conan Doyle trained as a Doctor, we will travel to London and Baker Street. Today you'll find that 221b Baker Street, the fictional home of the great detective is in fact the Sherlock Holmes Museum. After enjoying the hustle and bustle of the metropolis it will be time to head off on a detective’s trail of our own around Great Britain. Visit if you dare Dartmoor at the dead of night, inspiration for the blood curdling “Hound of the Baskervilles” and follow in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes and the brilliant Conan Doyle to discover why this fictional character has endured through the ages to thrill readers and film goers of the past, present, and without any shadow of doubt, the future.
